Divemaster

Become a professional

Divemaster

Here begins your new career as a PADI Professional

The first step as a professional recreational diver begins with the PADI Divemaster program.

During the course you work closely with a PADI Instructor on real tasks, expanding your diving knowledge and improving your techniques. PADI Divemaster training develops leadership skills, qualifying you to supervise diving activities and to assist instructors with student divers.

The PADI Divemaster certification is the prerequisite for the PADI Assistant Instructor and PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor certifications.

What will I be able to do with my PADI Divemaster certification?

Once certified as an active PADI Divemaster you will be authorized to:

  • Supervise both training and non-training activities, by planning, organizing and directing dives
  • Assist a PADI Instructor during the training sessions of any PADI diving course
  • Lead the PADI Skin Diver course and the PADI Discover Snorkeling program independently
  • Lead the PADI Discover Local Diving experience
  • Lead the PADI Scuba Review program
  • If you are qualified as a Discover Scuba Diving Leader, independently conduct the PADI Discover Scuba Diving program
  • Obtain the PADI Digital Underwater Photographer Specialty Instructor level to be able to teach the underwater digital photography specialty
  • Independently guide PADI Open Water Diver course students through the exploration portion of training dives 2, 3 and 4 at the rate of two student divers per certified divemaster
  • Accompany PADI Open Water Diver course students under the indirect supervision of a PADI Instructor during surface swimming to and from entry/exit points and during navigation exercises.
  • Additionally, when the PADI Instructor is leading an exercise, such as an ascent or descent, a PADI Divemaster may stay with the other student divers (with an individual student or buddy).
  • Accompany student divers on adventure dives or specialty training dives under the indirect supervision of a PADI Instructor
  • Lead the AquaMission of the PADI Seal Team program
  • Lead subsequent dives for Discover Scuba Diving participants, under indirect instructor supervision after successfully completing the first dive with a PADI Instructor
