La Herradura, on Granada’s Tropical Coast, offers divers a wide range of biodiversity, a true paradise where activities and courses are available for all levels of divers, from those trying scuba diving for the first time to experts.
The First Contact is the Introductory Dive
The introductory dive isn’t a course in itself; there’s no official certification, but it does provide your first real experience with scuba diving.
After a basic technical briefing on the equipment, fundamental concepts, and underwater communication with the instructor, the practice begins. You’ll never dive deeper than ten meters, and the entire dive will last no more than 45 minutes.
You don’t need to worry about physical limitations or age. If you’re over ten years old and don’t have serious heart or lung conditions or ear infections, you can enjoy the full experience.
Certification Levels
Most centers in La Herradura operate under the standards of international organizations such as PADI, SSI, or ACUC. These certifications are valid worldwide.
Beginner Level: Open Water Diver (OWD)
This is the most popular certification, and upon completion, you can dive independently anywhere in the world, up to a depth of 18 meters.
The theory portion is online, while the practical portion is conducted either in pools or shallow water. Four dives in La Herradura are more than enough to obtain the certification and the necessary skills.
Advanced Level: Advanced Open Water Diver
Once you have the basic certification, this course allows you to increase your depth to 30 meters and improve your skills. It covers underwater navigation using a compass, deep diving, species identification, and much more.
Safety and Rescue: Rescue Diver and EFR (Emergency Facelift)
For responsible and self-sufficient divers, this is considered the perfect course. You will learn to anticipate problems and manage them when they arise. You will also be taught first aid and CPR.
Divemaster
When your hobby becomes too small and professionalism emerges, this is the next step you should take. This internship is aimed at those who want to start in the professional world, leading groups, courses, and managing the logistics of a dive center.

Legal and Medical Requirements
1. Medical Questionnaire: If you answer “Yes” to any risk factor (asthma, heart problems, etc.), you will need a medical certificate signed by a sports medicine physician or hyperbaric medicine specialist.
2. Diving Insurance: During the courses, the center usually includes it, but once completed, you will need to purchase your own insurance in any of its available forms.
3. Age: Although children can start early, there are specific depth limits for minors (Junior Open Water).
