On the way to becoming an Open Water Instructor
This is the first half of the Open Water Instructor course. You can take it separately or just before joining the Instructor course we offer.
It’s time to take the reins!
As an Assistant Instructor, your skills will expand: you’ll now be able to lead dives, conduct Try Scuba sessions, assist instructors with their courses and lead speciality courses. You’ll take on more responsibility, but you’ll also receive the greatest reward of all: sharing your passion with the world.

Assistant Instructor
- Access to the SSI platform to complete the theory module online.
- Certification costs.
- The number of dives required for you to reach the appropriate level of comfort.

- To be 18 years old.
- Have 60 logged dives (75 before certification)
- Hold the qualification.
- SSI Divemaster or equivalent.
- Hold a Nitrox 40% qualification
- Diving insurance.
- Theory section: we’ll give you access to the SSI online platform so you can study the theory at home, at your own pace, and be fully prepared for this intensive week.
- Practical component / on which you will be assessed: During this course, we will prepare you to develop your teaching and demonstration skills in the water to a professional standard.
We will assess you on:
- Your physical condition in the water.
- Academic presentation (on the Open Water Diver course syllabus)
- OWD demonstration workshop.
- Demonstration of Open Water Diver skills in confined water.
- Deliver the TryScuba, ScubaSkills Update and Buoyancy Specialty programmes (plus Computer Diving, Marine Ecology and SSI Explorers upon completion of the online courses)
- To teach the academic content of the OWD programme.
- Teach the confined-water sessions of the OWD programme (excluding emergency ascent skills) and surface skills during open-water dives.
- Teach these specialities by taking part in a weekly speciality instructor course: Altitude Diving, Boat Diving, Equipment Techniques, Navigation, Photo/Video.
This course runs for 35–40 hours, i.e. 5–6 days.
- Maintain active SSI status.
